When we hear about investment, we often think of real estate, stock market or cryptocurrencies.
But, what if the first thing you should invest in to reach a freer, happier and joyful life is YOU?
What if helping your brain to think differently, learn faster and memorize more was the secret for a better, richer and pleasant life?
I think that there is one type of investing that will pay huge dividends and that is often forgotten: investing in yourself!
What does investing mean?
As per Merriam Webster dictionary:
Investing is not only a monetary action. Investing time and effort can also be very valuable. When we decide to invest in something, it may be for a monetary return but investing can have other benefits like showing you the way of a happier, healthier and fuller life.
Your brain is amazing
Your brain is a muscle. The more you make it work, the better it gets. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll always have a human brain looking for all the bad, questioning everything and trying to make you spiral on the littlest things happening. But with the right mindset, training, knowledge and support, you can make him work to your advantage.
In the past 2 years, I’ve discovered that you can train your brain and coach yourself through the toughest thoughts and feelings. My coach, Heather Boersma, is often reminding me that life is 50/50. Every situation will bring happiness, calmness and joy as well as disappointment, stress and challenges. This is life and it is what makes it beautiful.
This is where the power of knowing and understanding your brain lies: once you know that you’ll have to deal with uncomfortable situations and that you can do it, it’s easier to take a step back and say “ok brain, let’s do it”
First investment to spend time and money on: YOU
“You can not pour from an empty cup.”
This is something I had a hard time understanding and I still have challenges to act on. But it is true. If you are exhausted, on the edge of burn out or so stressed you cannot think properly, then how can you show up for yourself, your family and your business?
The first thing you should take care of is yourself so you have energy, brain space and time to show up for others and your endeavours. Don’t you agree?
How do we invest in ourselves?
The first thing that comes to my mind and that has been very powerful for me is coaching. It can be coaching on a specific subject like real estate or marketing or it can be more general life coaching. Having someone in your corner (that is not your partner) is so forceful. In addition, when joining a coaching program you usually become part of a community of persons that have the same interests as you. I think that being able to talk about your challenges and getting help to find solutions is one of the best thing you can invest in.
Joining a coaching program can be expensive so let’s look at other ways to invest in yourself and especially your brain!
- Working out
Did you know that working out can decrease feelings of anxiety, improve your focus and concentration, promote the growth of new brain cells as well as protect your brain from aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
Investing some time in your week for workouts will help you be more effective and see things more clearly. There are so many free workout videos on Youtube that there are no excuses. Even if it’s only 10 minutes a day, start today and get the habit in!
- Get good sleep
Investing in good nights of sleep will provide you with a sharper brain. In fact, sleep allows your brain to rest, store your memories and process your emotions so you are more efficient during your waking times. In addition, while you are asleep, your blood pressure goes down, giving your heart and blood vessels a bit of a rest which obviously has long-term benefits.
- Eat healthier
Investing in yourself by eating healthier and plenty of omega-3 fatty acid products will help your brain perform better. It will help you to learn better, remember things more easily, and avoid quick changes in mood.
- Listen to podcast
Investing time in your knowledge by listening to podcasts is easy and efficient. Nowadays, you can find podcasts about literally everything! You can listen to podcasts while driving, taking a shower or going on a walk. We’ve learned so much about real estate by listening to podcasts. Find the subject that interests you, look for a podcast you like and make it a habit to listen to it regularly.
- Read personal development book
Reading will improve your brain in a lot of ways. You can choose to read books to take a step back from your day to day life and work on your imagination. Reading can also be a learning experience for different subjects. Personal development books have been a must for us in our financial freedom journey. In the past years we learnt how to create new habits with Atomic Habits by James Clear, how to improve our brain with Limitless by Jim Kwik, how to be efficient with The 4 hour work week by Tim Ferriss. And these are just a few examples. Reading is powerful!
- Expand your network
Did you know that you are the average of the 5 persons you hang out the most with? Expanding your network, meeting new people and getting to know new personalities takes time and energy but it can change your life. Invest some time and energy in getting out of your comfort zone and expanding your network and you’ll see changes in your life for sure!
Improving your lifestyle
Investing in improving your lifestyle and your day to day habits can also be powerful and only takes time and motivation.
- Journal and Manifesting
Journaling and manifesting will allow you to keep your focus on what is important to you and how your actions are aligned with your values. Every day, take a few minutes to write your goals and what you want to see happening in your life, 5 things you are grateful for that happened in the last 24 hours and an “I AM” statement.
- Set goals
Setting goals and going back to them regularly will help you focus on what really matters to you and why. Invest some time into thinking about your goals, writing them down and making them easy to track.
- Downsize your belongings
Investing time and energy into downsizing your belongings can also make your life easier in the long run. Downsizing can be challenging but it will free space and time for you.
- Spend time with your family
Spending quality time with family and friends is good for you and your brain. Investing time in your family and friends is important because it helps you build connections. Getting and offering support is a must for mental health, it boosts self-confidence and reduces stress. Next time you are offered some friends or family time and you are on the edge of saying no because you have “so many things to do”, remember that this time will help you be even more focused, efficient and motivated when you are back! And often the best ideas come from relaxed and happy experiences so trust the universe that it is time for a break!
One thing to remember
If there is one thing to remember here is that you are worth investing in. Investing in yourself and your brain will allow you to improve your career, build confidence and enrich your life in so many ways.
